This morning I woke up and it was sunny out. It was clear enough that I could see the Olympic mountains out my skylight, framed by the Seattle skyline and the Space Needle. It was a beautiful new day, and the world just seemed better, as if a huge grey cloud had been lifted from everything.

Last night, I came home just before the election was called, so Rachel and I celebrated alone with a toast and a glass of wine. After the commotion had settled, I started trying to do homework. I could hear the helicopters following the celebrations. Firecrackers were going off on my block. I read the news. Then, when I was in it with my homework, my friend Catherine texted me. “hey, are you on pike and broadway by any chance?” No. But she convinced me to go party. I got Rachel out of bed (she couldn’t sleep anyway) and we walked to the intersection of Pike Street and Broadway avenue. What we saw…

Tonight was Halloween. I was Waldo. I went to three parties. They really kind of sucked, as house parties usually do. The first was too small and I didn’t really know many people. Too, I felt kind of sick. The second was a big party that was cramped and hot and I also didn’t know anyone. Lots of girls I did not know wanted to take their photos with me because I was Waldo. It was weird. The third party was at my friend Wilfred’s house. It was a nice party; I knew some people. I danced a little. My friend’s friend’s house was the house next door so we drank there and then went to Wilfred’s. Before I left, I fawned a little over a girl that I know because she is a talented musician and I have seen her perform before. She had no idea who I was, but was flattered. The music at the party was loud, and my ears are ringing because of it, which scares me because my ears always ring so I am wary of damaging them further.

Today I wrote a short song without a title, lyrics, or anything. It is two tracks sloppily recorded into GarageBand. I don’t know what to do with it next, but I like it a lot. It reminds me of Bibio. It is below.

I am not feeling particularly well today. Last night was a weird night and it got pretty sloppy. So sloppy, in fact, that I will openly declare it the most intoxicated I’ve been thus far without getting sick. I haven’t really eaten, which I should. I’ve had water, coffee and a cup of chocolate milk all day.

Suddenly, I’m not really up for writing anything down.

This weekend was, contrary to what I said today in my obligatory inter-office co-worker small talk, actually kind of exciting. But it all actually begins last week.

Sometime last week, Rachel and I finished playing through Halo 2. It’s become very common practice for us, without class or many friends around (it being summer and all) or many other obligations, to play lots of Xbox in the interim. Anyway, playing through Halo 2 brought back lots of very fond memories of playing through the first Halo with my brother seven years ago. I reminisced about the past, but then started looking towards the future of these games.

Mind you, I haven’t kept up on any gaming news since I was a sophomore in high school. Anyway, I got so excited about Halo 3 that I resolved almost immediately to buy a 360. I don’t think in my life I’ve ever rationalized and justified and decided on a purchase that fast. But I got a fantastic deal on Craigslist and to my surprise I wasn’t ripped off or murdered in the secluded parking lot I picked it up in.

Though they’ve been around for a while, I still have not owned a seventh-generation system and I could not be more excited about the purchase. I got a brand new Halo 2 and 3 dirt cheap, bought used copies of Halo 1 and FEAR, and I’m probably going to get Call of Duty 4 and maybe Xbox LIVE. I’m a little concerned that it is going to consume my life the way it did when I was fourteen and had no girlfriend and no job to speak of, but that’s another matter wholly.

Anyway, other than playing 360, the rest of my weekend was spent drinking. I went to Von’s Friday night and drank a mug of Guinness bigger than my head, Saturday I went to my friend’s party in West Seattle where I learned one of the best drinks ever (spiced rum + Squirt = creamsicle) and slept over until Sunday morning. I spent most of Sunday with my buddy James and at a small party of a couple of friends making concoctions of mixed drinks that actually turned out okay and didn’t make me sick. Huzzah!

Boring, uneventful weekend, I know. Here are the exciting new toys:

I just got back from happy hour at the Owl & Thistle (whose website is like an atrocious AOL personal site circa 1997) with my coworkers. It was my first interaction with them outside of awkward stops at my desk on the way to the bathroom or the kitchen. It was really fun and, though I knew they were all interesting characters, I got to know them a little bit better.

On the downside, though, I got a good (free, thanks guys!) buzz going on two Mack & Jacks and an empty stomach. So, with an empty house upon arriving home, and in an effort to keep the buzz going, I texted some friends to see if they were free for drinks. I suppose they are busy or simply don’t care enough (read: pity pahty) to go out with me for a bit.

Yes, I’m resorting to drinking alone at home.

The fellow that my landlord hired to fix my skylight came today, so I have finally photographed the view from my room. I’ll put that up tomorrow or something.

I woke up at three or four this morning fully clothed with all of my effects in the bed around me. I was still intoxicated out of my mind. I’m told that in a single fluid motion I removed the covers from my body, got up, and booked it down the hall to the bathroom. This I remember doing. I didn’t, however, immediately remember who paid for the two beers I had last night at Quinn’s with Rachel and her friends Bobby and Tom from California.

The whole thing started when we got dinner at 7:00pm at The Elysian. I had a Dragonstooth Stout and a Full Sail Session. We came back to my room and watched The Legend of Old Gregg, drinking homemade alcoholic “nectar” and cheap port wine. At about 10:30, we decided to head back out to a pub. Rachel, Tom, and Bobby have brand new fake identifications, you see. So we had to go make use, of course. It would have been useful, except our chiseled server who looked like he just stepped out of an American Apparel advert didn’t even ask for them. Which was fine by us. It is here that I realized that Guinness on tap really is considerably better than from a bottle or can. Two pints and some sips of mojito later I was definitively in the bag and well on my way to dead brain cells, minor liver damage and discolored sclera and a hangover that would not quit.

The weekend began with a Mexican dinner in Belltown and an extremely late free showing of Speed Racer in the U-District, which got universally bad reviews, probably because it was like a bajillion-dollar bad acid trip seizure-fest without a story interesting enough to make the preposterous duration worthwhile. We had to get a taxi home. As soon as I got back I passed out.

We woke up late the next day and made breakfast at 2pm. We went to Pike Place with Bobby and Tom as well as George (also from California, but also attending SU). We ate chocolate pasta, root beer honey sticks, and I bought two gigantic grapefruit. Pike Place is so touristy, but sometimes it’s just the shit. After walking along the waterfront, we hit the Elysian where all the shenanigans ensued.

Tomorrow, I’m planning to wake up at 9:30, be in the studio by 10, track a song or two and maybe do my homework. I will be out of the studio before 1pm and after that I have a second interview with Grist. I like my chances on this one, but we’ll see. After that I hope to have Typee by Melville at least close to finished and have my response typed out.

Job interviews, lease-signings, ecology field trips, 80-degree weather, payday, classless Mondays. I like this week.
